Perhaps more distressing than the thought of animals making a home in your gutters is the realization that spiders and other insects are doing the same! Without gutter screens your gutters will fill up with leaves and muck. If you have been cleaning your gutters manually then you already know that even days or weeks after rain the gunk in your gutters is still wet. Again, these damp and dark crevices in your clogged gutters are an open invitation for bugs to move in.

Insect infestation can cause problems for your home. Your soffit and fascia do not have to be moist to attract wood eating insect like beetles and termites, though without gutter screens there is a good chance that rainwater has seeped into your soffit and fascia making it more desirable for these types of critters. Beetles will lay eggs in the wood, and when the larvae hatch, they begin to tunnel. As they bore, the tunnels fill with sawdust.

Maintaining clean and clear gutters will dramatically increase your chances of preventing wood damaging critters from infiltrating your home.

Aside from the pecuniary effects of insect infiltration, bugs are simply annoying to live with. With gutter screens it is easier to keep bugs outside where they belong.

Thinking about the possibility of installing a quality leaf guard or rain guard system on your home’s existing gutters? It’s a wise choice indeed, and here are 10 convincing reasons why:

One: Gutter guards enable a significant reduction in maintenance. By keeping debris from building up in your home’s gutters and downspouts in the first place, you’ll barely ever need to clean the gutters—and occasional gutter maintenance after installing covers is usually as simple as giving them a good hosing down every so often.

Two: You’ll be much less prone to injury. Cleaning gutters presents a good deal of risk to your health—there’s all the up and down on the ladders, and of course, hanging halfway off the edge of the roof to scoop all of the gunk out…Yuck! Leaf guards significantly reduce the need to expose yourself to the dangers.

Three: Gutter guards add value to your home. Some of the most attractive value-producing selling points revolve around maintenance reduction home improvements. No one likes to clean gutters—making this one improvement that everyone can appreciate.

Four: Properly functioning gutter systems will help keep your basement dry. It simple—when gutters and downspouts become clogged, the water instead finds its way down to your home’s foundation. You can guess where it will go from there!

Five: Gutter covers can help with ice damming problems. If you’ve had problems with ice dams on your home’s roof before, you’ve probably noticed the damaging results the condition can cause. A leaf guard works to significantly reduce the ability for ice to build up in gutters, which ultimately leads to ice dams.

Six: Clean, properly-functioning gutters are much less likely to encourage mold or mildew growth. Think about it—when gutters become clogged, even if they do still enable some degree of water flow, the debris will still stay moist. Continuously damp conditions do tend to promote undesirable growth.

Seven: Clogged gutters can become a breeding ground for pests! Standing pools of water—a common occurrence in clogged gutter systems—definitely make a perfect home for mosquitoes and other insects that you just don’t want around. With the ongoing West Nile disease that’s being spread and transferred by mosquitoes, it’s just not worth the risk.

Eight: With efficiently-functioning gutters and a little bit of ingenuity, you could even set up a rainwater harvesting system and do the green thing by reusing the “grey water” to water your landscaping, gardens, and flowers. This would naturally be most effective when gutters don’t become frequently jammed up with debris.

Nine: Non-maintained, non-protected gutters will eventually rot. Gutters are expensive—why would you want to let them deteriorate until the point that they need to be completely replaced? Even aluminum gutters will develop corrosion, and eventually holes, when they’re perpetually full.

Ten: Leaky and overflowing gutters can cause all kinds of trouble between the exterior and interior walls of your home. Uncontrolled water will find its way into the walls, gradually causing substantial damage to siding and even brick masonry. Don’t let it happen to your home—take proactive measures today by installing effective leaf guards!

Wouldn’t you agree that installing gutter guards is probably one of the most effective home improvements that can be made?

Have you had enough when it comes to all the trouble and hassle that perpetually clogged gutters cause? If you’re like most homeowners, the thought of climbing up a ladder twice a year to scrape debris and sludge out of the gutters is less than appealing. But there is a simple solution—install quality gutter guards to keep your gutter system clean and functional all the time. Continue reading to learn about how gutter guards can save you more than money………

Gutter Guards Save Money

It’s true. The initial investment of having gutter guards installed to protect your home’s gutters from clogging with debris will pay for itself time and time again when compared to spending your own valuable time cleaning gutters or paying a maintenance person to handle the dirty job for you. And just think of the potential costs that would occur if someone would get hurt while cleaning the gutters (maybe it’s better not to).

Installing Gutter Guards Saves Maintenance

That is, protected gutters save maintenance issues well beyond just everyday gutter cleaning alone. Gutters that are free and clear to promote proper drainage of rainwater eliminate the maintenance hassle that clogged downspouts cause. Problems like flooded landscaping, ice dams, mildewed paint, erosion, and soggy yards are easy to prevent with a free-flowing gutter system.

Covering Gutters Saves Your Basement

It doesn’t take much more than one decent rainfall with clogged gutters to cause irreparable damage to a normally dry basement. When water is not contained by clean gutters and directed away from a home’s foundation walls, it naturally seeks the path of least resistance instead. This means all of the rainwater that runs off the roof (a remarkably significant amount) will pour directly downwards and pool at the walls of the foundation. From there, it only has one place to go—and your basement is just not the place you want that to be.

Gutter Guards Save Your Home

Water, and particularly the damage it causes, is the number one enemy of any home. While it might seem like a harmless natural element, misdirected rainwater is caused by full, leaky gutters can do significant damage to a home in a very short matter of time. When water finds its way inside the envelope of your home’s walls, it can cause toxic mold and mildew in just a matter of days—and that’s not even mentioning the permanent long term structural damage that will occur due to water damage and rotting.

Gutter Guards Can Even Save You

Of course, this is the most important thing of all—your safety and well being. Because having gutter guards installed on your home’s gutters ultimately keeps you off the ladder and on solid ground, they are remarkably effective at preventing accidents and injuries. After all, among all of the home maintenance projects faced by the average homeowner, those requiring the use of ladders are clearly at the top of the most dangerous projects list. Why not avoid the risk altogether?

Save the money and save the hassle. Make your home’s rainwater management system fully functional once again by having quality gutter guards installed today.

The origin of Gutter Helmet began in the 1960’s when Bob Demartini (MIT graduate) began crafting an idea for the first solid gutter cover system. However, the idea to inception would have to wait for nearly two decades. During that time, Bob gained extensive knowledge and experience in product development from his positions at such companies as General Electric and Huyck Corporation.

After retiring in 1979, Bob devoted his time to developing the first professional-grade gutter protection system—Gutter Helmet®. In the fall of 1981, the first of several US patents were granted and “Never Clean Your Gutters Again®” would become vernacular to millions of homeowners.

Curious about how typical house gutters are structured? Here is a basic outline of how a traditional house gutter system fits together.

Gutters are formed in a number of shapes and profiles, but the key components and the way those parts fit together is generally the same. Most house gutters are made of sections that are screwed together. Either a Spike-and-Ferrule hangar or a bracket hangar supports each section. At the end of the gutter, by the edge of the house, the downspout connects to the gutter through a drop outlet. An end cap is placed on the end of the last section of gutter to give the system a finished look and to channel water down the downspout. The drop outlet connects to two downspout elbows, which allows the gutter downspout to curve around the edge where your house meets the roof. Downspout straps are placed every few feet to secure the downspout to your house.
